3 Steps to Properly Storing A Performance Engine

Posted on : viernes, enero 10th, 2014

You’ve spent thousands to purchase an engine to pursue your racing passion.  When the engine is not in use for any prolonged period of time or when the season is over these steps should be incorporated into your maintenance program.  The effects of not properly storing an engine are mainly corrosion.  This can be as destructive in the summer as winter.  By justfollowing a few simple steps your racing engine will continue to perform for you from rebuild to rebuild.

  1. FOG THE ENGINE

If the engine is still in your car, fire it up and use a product such as CRC’s Engine Stor.  Spray the fogging spray down the carburetor or injection stacks.  15 to 20 seconds is all that is needed to properly coat the internal components for storage.  If the engine is out of the car, spray the fogging oil into the exhaust valve ports and sparkplug holes and then manually turn the engine over several times.

  1. DRAIN ALL FLUIDS

We have seen too many spring repair bills, expensive repair bills,  due to frozen engine blocks that crack.  Make sure if the engine is being stored in an unheated facility that all fluids are drained. It is preferable to store the engine in a location that is heated.

  1. PURGE METHANOL FUEL SYSTEMS

Methanol is a very corrosive fuel so it is important to drain the entire system.  Remove all lines and make sure that everything is dry.  Any valves or moveable parts should be sprayed with WD40.
